The Eastern Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has demonstrated its commitment to promoting local industrial growth and protecting Nigeria’s economy.
This was exemplified when the Command auctioned seized petroleum and palm oil products valued at ₦26.53 million.
Speaking during the public auction held at the Command’s Oron Outstation in Akwa Ibom State, the Acting Comptroller of the Eastern Marine Command, Deputy Comptroller Esien Esiet, said the exercise underscores the Service’s resolve to curb smuggling and create a conducive environment for legitimate businesses to thrive.
The auction, conducted in line with Section 119 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, involved 14,720 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 14,925 litres of industrial palm oil, edible palm oil and vegetable oil with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦26.53 million.
Deputy Comptroller Esiet noted that the seized products were intercepted during anti-smuggling operations within the command’s area of responsibility, adding that such illegal activities undermine local industries, distort market competition and deprive the government of vital revenue. “This exercise reflects our unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability and the prudent management of government assets,” he said.
According to him, combating smuggling remains critical to protecting indigenous industries and supporting economic growth, particularly in sectors where local producers require a level playing field to compete and expand.
The acting comptroller also commended officers and men of the command for their professionalism and resilience in securing Nigeria’s maritime borders despite the challenging terrain in which they operate. He assured participants that the auction process was conducted in a transparent, fair and legally compliant manner, providing equal opportunities for all eligible bidders.
He further expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for his leadership and support, while acknowledging the contributions of other security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and the media in the fight against trans-border crimes.
He urged stakeholders and members of the public to remain law-abiding and support the Nigeria Customs Service in its efforts to safeguard the nation’s economic interests and encourage the growth of local industries.
