The Federal Government has concluded plans to deploy robotics in the fight against insurgency.
The Senate stated this during the consideration of a report on the rising state of insecurity in Nigeria.
The report was submitted by the Joint Committee on Legislative Compliance and Communications. It revealed that the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy had established a centre for artificial intelligence and robotics; adding that this would aid the deployment of robots and artificial intelligence in combating crimes in Nigeria.
Chairman of the Joint Committee, Senator Adelere Adeyemi Oriolowo revealed that the SIM registration exercise supervised by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has also contributed to a reduction in the use of phones by kidnappers; especially during the process of negotiating ransoms.
The SIM registration exercise had included a mandatory provision of the National Identity Number (NIN).
He added that the Joint Committee also discovered other programmes by the ministry and its agencies; which he hailed for supporting security agencies in fighting crime.
