The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN Foundation), has condemned the ill-treatment of four persons and the killing of Mr. Chima Ikwunado who was illegally detained, extorted, tortured and allegedly murdered by some officers of the Mile 1 E-Crack Police Division located at Port-harcourt, Rivers State.
According to a statement issued by Ikule Emmanuel, NOPRIN National Coordinator, Mr. Chima, a roadside mechanic in Port-harcourt took his client’s (name withheld) vehicle for testing on the 19th December, 2019 but was apprehended together with four others, by some police officers of the Mile 1 E-Crack Police Division, for taking one way route.
The Network questioned whether the offence reported to have been committed by the deceased required a death penalty.
“As serious as this case is, it is very surprising to know that the result of police investigations are yet to be released even after 3 weeks of the occurrence of the incident.
NOPRIN calls on the Inspector General of police to order an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Chima’s death, immediate release of the four persons detained, check the activities of SP. Benson Adetuyi (commander E-Crack with his team) and ensure all who are involved are made to face the law.” the NOPRIN demanded.
