Transcorp Energy Plans First Nuclear Power Plants in Nigeria

Transcorp Energy Ltd, a unit of Transnational Corp. of Nigeria Plc, has plans to develop nuclear power in that country.

This is forms part of plans to improved access to electricity in Africa’s most populous nation, Bloomberg reports.

Said to be a “less expensive and less complicated solution” the company plans to use OPEN100 model technology, according to a statement issued on 1 July.

According to reports, Nigeria’s science and technology minister, Ogbonnaya Onu, has set up a committee including representatives of Transcorp and the government to manage the execution of the project.

The minister commented: “We are delighted to see this innovation and appreciate Transcorp for continuing to champion innovative solutions to Nigeria’s power infrastructure needs.”

Peter Ikenga, the Head of Transcorp’s Energy Business, said the plan offered considerable potential to the power sector.

He continued: “This project is transformative and a first in Nigeria and would radically change the way nuclear power plants are deployed, offering a substantially less expensive and less complicated solution.

“It will further provide the country with a reliable and sustainable energy source, without the challenges preventing stable and reliable power generation in Nigeria.”
