The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged Christians to remain vigilant against violence by their adversaries just as it condemned the killings that marred Palm Sunday celebrations in Angwan Rukuba, Gari Ya Waye area of Jos North, Plateau State.
In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN described the incident as a tragic distortion of a sacred day, noting that what should have been a moment of spiritual reflection turned into one of bloodshed, as innocent Nigerians; men, women and children, were reportedly hunted and killed.
The statement says armed assailants, said to be operating in large numbers, infiltrated the civilian community disguised in uniforms resembling those of security personnel before opening fire on defenceless residents.
Archbishop Okoh called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible, stressing that swift and decisive justice is essential to restore public confidence and affirm the sanctity of human life.
He also raised concern over the use of military uniforms by the attackers, warning that such tactics undermine public trust in security institutions and must be thoroughly investigated. He urged security agencies to be proactive in preventing further attacks.
CAN advised Christians observing Holy Week and the Easter period to remain vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their communities.
