Italian energy giant Eni has reported 125 per cent increase in its third-quarter adjusted net profit on October 23, supported by higher oil and gas production, stronger refining margins, and improved commodity prices.
The earnings increase prompted the company to raise its full-year cash flow outlook and announce additional shareholder distributions.
Adjusted net profit reached approximately $3.14 billion (2.8 billion euros), compared with $1.46 billion (1.3 billion euros) a year earlier. The result exceeded analysts’ consensus estimate of approximately $2.8 billion (2.5 billion euros).
Eni increased its 2026 operating cash flow guidance to approximately $18.5 billion (16.5 billion euros), up from $16.8 billion (15 billion euros).
The improved outlook supported an extraordinary dividend totaling approximately $1.46 billion (1.3 billion euros), scheduled for December, and a 12 per cent increase in its share repurchase program to approximately $4.26 billion (3.8 billion euros).
Refining operations contributed significantly to the earnings improvement.
Eni reported approximately $818 million (730 million euros) in adjusted refining operating profit, supported by higher refinery utilization and stronger petroleum product margins.
The company’s standard refining margin increased to $28.10 per barrel during the quarter, compared with $8.90 a year earlier and $8.30 in the second quarter.
The improvement reflects favorable refining conditions as geopolitical disruptions and transportation constraints continue affecting global petroleum product markets.
However, elevated shipping expenses and unfavorable crude quality differentials partially offset those gains, illustrating the importance of feedstock costs and logistics in determining refinery profitability.
The company’s broader refining and chemicals segment remained affected by weakness in petrochemicals, where restructuring efforts continued amid challenging product margins.
Upstream operations also delivered stronger results.
Underlying oil and gas production increased 7 per cent year over year to 1.83 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, supported by project ramp-ups and contributions from the Searah joint venture in Southeast Asia.
Eni raised its full-year underlying production growth forecast to between 6 per cent and 7 per cent.
The company’s Enilive business also contributed to earnings diversification, reporting approximately $459 million (410 million euros) in adjusted operating profit, an 80 per cent year-over-year increase.
For energy investors, the results demonstrate how integrated companies can benefit from stronger upstream realizations while capturing additional earnings through refining and related operations.
Eni’s balance sheet strengthened during the quarter, with pro forma gearing declining to 9 per cent, providing additional flexibility for investment and shareholder distributions.
Management maintained its gross capital expenditure plan at approximately $7.84 billion (7 billion euros), while forecasting net capital spending below $5.04 billion (4.5 billion euros).
Looking ahead, investors will be monitoring refining margins, production growth, operating cash flow, and capital discipline to assess the sustainability of Eni’s increased shareholder distributions.
The company’s latest results highlight the financial importance of diversified earnings, operational efficiency, and disciplined capital allocation as integrated energy producers navigate changing global petroleum markets.
