A Nigerian identified as Amaike Frank Ile, arrested while attempting to export cocaine the United Kingdom has bagged a 30-month jail term.
Ile, 40, is based in Trinidad and Tobago.
He pleaded guilty during a virtual appearance before San Fernando Magistrate Anslem Leander.
The man was arrested on January 13 in San Fernando, trying to export the banned substance in fishing reels. He was nabbed following a tip-off to the Police who nabbed him at a post office.
He had reportedly signed the exportation documents to send the packages to the United Kingdom. When confronted as to the content of the package, he owned up that it contained 150 grammes of cocaine.
Upon examining the packages, it was seen to contain five fishing reels containing cocaine in a powdery form; wrapped in carbon paper with clear tape.
He was then arrested and taken to Marabella Police Station while the Customs and Excise officers were contacted.
Thereafter, he was charged for attempting to export prohibited goods and packaging items in a manner to deceive Customs and Excise officers.
The culprit claimed he engaged in the illegal activity because he was in difficulties with associate and pleaded for leniency. However, the magistrate sentenced him to 30 months on each charge to run concurrently.
Ile faced another charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
This stemmed from a search of his home where the police allegedly found 446 grammes of cocaine.
