This Is Time To Encourage Women Participation In Energy Sector Development

A call has been initiated to address gender gap in energy sector where women are not given proper access to contribute in the sector’s development.

The call was made by the Executive Director of Finance Petralon Energy Limited, Adeola Akinrinmade, the Diamond Sponsor for Africa Energy Week 2024, when she sought for the inclusion of women in the energy sector.

She added that fostering collaboration and sustainability in the energy industry will require a focused, results-driven approach regarding the African Women Business Energy Network.

In an interview with News Central on Thursday at the #AEW2024, she said, “When it comes to women in the energy sector, while we are represented, there is certainly room for improvement. Often, I find myself as the only woman in the room, which highlights the need for a more inclusive environment.

“The value women bring to the table is immense, but without the right support and opportunities, that value is not fully realised. We need to create an enabling environment where women can thrive, multiply their contributions, and be empowered to lead.”

She said the capital is available for SMEs, but the key question is whether these businesses are structured to attract investment.

“SMEs must ensure they have viable products, sound corporate governance, proper documentation, and the right financial structure. Whether seeking funds from banks, private equity, or even friends and family, the financing solutions should align with the business’s needs.

“It’s crucial for SMEs to take a strategic, inward-looking approach, seek financial advice where necessary, and align their business model with the right funding opportunities. On the issue of exploitation in Africa, it’s not unique to the continent but is a global concern. Africa must recognise its immense value, especially in terms of resources like gas, where Nigeria alone holds 33% of Africa’s reserves.”

She emphasised that the key to avoiding exploitation lies in knowing one’s worth, protecting assets, and attracting the right kind of investors. She also highlighted Africa’s incredible potential and stressed that it is up to them to be more self-aware, strategic, and intentional in driving growth.

“It is important to set clear, measurable objectives and work towards tackling the most pressing issues in a systematic way. Progress should be tracked through a framework that evaluates both successes and challenges. While there is still work to be done, the fact that such a forum exists shows we are on the right track, and with the right framework, we can achieve our goals.

“In summary, Africa has boundless potential, and with collaboration, a clearer sense of self-awareness, and a commitment to strategic development, we can achieve great things in the energy sector and beyond.”
