Governor of Cross River State, Apostle Sen. (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, has officially unveiled the theme for the 2026 Carnival Calabar and Festivals as “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.”
The announcement was made on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at a colourful ceremony held at the Eko Hotel & Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, marking the official kick-off of activities for the 21st edition of Africa’s Biggest Street Party.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otu reflected on the remarkable success of the 2025 Carnival, which celebrated the 20th anniversary with a record 32 days of uninterrupted creativity, cultural display, and tourism influx. He expressed profound gratitude to sponsors, participating Carnival Bands, tourists, and corporate partners for their contributions to last year’s event.
“We owe a debt of boundless gratitude to our sponsors who believed in our brands. We are also appreciative of the untiring efforts of all the participating Carnival Bands,” the Governor said.
He emphasized that the annual theme unveiling follows international best practices and serves as more than a ceremonial event. According to him, the theme acts as a creative code for participating bands to interpret through costumes, choreography, props, and aesthetics, while simultaneously opening doors for business opportunities, especially in the informal sector, and promoting family bonding and homecoming.
Governor Otu revealed that the state is actively engaging the Cross River diaspora for greater participation, brand promotion, and material support. Plans are also underway for improved live streaming of the carnival and monetization of its content to boost revenue generation.
In a bid to strengthen Cross River’s position in the national and international tourism space, the Governor disclosed that the state’s Creative Economy is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. This includes the development of new tourism assets aimed at creating employment and attracting both repeat and new visitors.
“While we strive to maintain our enviable position… as the proud organizers of the ‘Africa’s Biggest Street Party’ – the Carnival Calabar, we need your continuous support,” he appealed to existing and potential sponsors.
The 2026 Carnival Calabar, under the theme “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny,” is expected to build on previous editions by delivering even greater cultural impact, economic value, and global visibility for Cross River State.
The full calendar of events for the 2026 edition is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
