The five South-East governors on Wednesday absented themselves from the commissioning of zonal police headquarters in Anambra State.

The headquarters known as zone 13 which was carved out from zone 9, Umuahia, Abia State, comprised Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi State with headquarters at Ukpo, Dunikofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A source in the police who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the press told our correspondent that a certain governor in the area resisted the location of the headquarters at Ukpo.

“The governor wanted the headquarters sited in his community but it didn’t work out. It was a huge war, siting it here. You won’t see any of the governors here. They won’t come because they didn’t support the location.

Similarly, a spokesperson for one of the governors told our correspondent that the governors were not consulted before choosing the location of the zonal headquarters.

He said,”That is not how it’s done. The governors were not consulted, all of a sudden they unileterally picked a location for the project. You can see any governor there.”. Can they do that to any other geopolitical zone?

Inaugurating the zonal office, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said he was delighted to commission the facility to further bring down policing to the grassroots .

The IGP represented by a Deputy Inspector General of Police, Celestine Okoye, hailed oil magnate , Arthur Eze, for facilitating the project.

He said,”It wasn’t an easy feat. Bringing the headquarters here was a thug of war. But thanks to Chief Arthur Eze who weathered the storm and ensure that this dream was realised.

He said the police authorities had concluded arrangements to site a mobile police base at Nsugbe, in the Anambra-East Council Area of the state.

Speaking, Chief Arthur Eze said his over three decades relationship with northern leaders was a blessing to his people.

He said, “Late Sanni Abacha gave me Dunikofia Local Government Area. Today President Muhammadu Buhari has given me zonal police headquarters. Northern leaders are cut to examplelary leadership.

“Today, the 2nd Niger Bridge, Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the Onitsha/Enugu Expressway are realities.

The zone 13 police headquarters is headed by Assistant Inspector General of Police, Danmallam Mohammed..
