LG Electronics Nigeria has brought a much-needed solar-powered borehole to the Illah community in Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State.
The rare display of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aims at ushering in a new era of clean, safe water access for hundreds of grassroot residents.
This initiative, part of LG’s ongoing CSR drive, represents more than just infrastructure but a beacon of care, empathy, and a deep-rooted commitment to touching lives where it matters most.
For years, the people of Illah have endured the daily hardship of sourcing water from distant or contaminated sources, risking health and safety in the pursuit of a basic human need. Children missed school to help their families fetch water. Women spent hours each day carrying heavy loads. Illnesses like cholera and typhoid silently stalked the vulnerable.
With smiles, songs, and heartfelt speeches, the community gathered to witness the commissioning of a solar-powered borehole system—a marvel of modern, sustainable engineering that harnesses sunlight to pump clean water straight to the heart of Illah.
“This is a historic day for our community,” said His Excellency, Ogbuenyi Paul Eloke Udu, Illah Palace representative. “For decades, we’ve prayed for help. Today, LG answered. Our children can now drink clean water, our women can rest, and our people can live healthier lives.”
What once required long treks to distant, unreliable water sources has now become a daily blessing—flowing, fresh water powered by the Nigerian sun, all thanks to a visionary partnership between technology and humanity.
Built with the Future in Mind: Sustainability at the Core
The borehole is powered entirely by solar energy, featuring high-efficiency photovoltaic panels, stainless steel submersible pumps, and water purification filters to ensure the water meets WHO standards. This innovation ensures minimal carbon footprint, zero operational cost for the community, and durability that will serve generations.
“At LG, we believe innovation must meet compassion,” said Mr. Paul Mba, Corporate Marketing Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria. “We are proud to deliver not just water, but a sustainable solution powered by the same sun that shines over every Nigerian.” Today, we do not just celebrate a borehole; we celebrate hope, health, and dignity restored, he said. “Water is life, and by providing it in a sustainable, renewable way, we are reaffirming our deep respect for the people of Illah and our responsibility to the environment.”
CSR with a Human Heart
LG Electronics has long been committed to improving lives across Nigeria—not just through technology, but through strategic investments in education, health, rural development, and environmental stewardship. With projects like this, LG continues to move from being just a technology brand to becoming a community partner and agent of change.
“We don’t want to be seen only in showrooms and stores,” added Mr. Moses Osime, Public Relations & CSR Manager, LG Electronics Nigeria. “We want to be felt in classrooms, in health centres, and now—in this case—in every glass of clean water poured in Illah.”
A Legacy of Impact
LG’s donation to Illah is part of a broader initiative to support underserved communities across Nigeria. Through investments in health, education, clean energy, and now water, the company continues to prove that business success and social impact can go hand in hand. The impact of the borehole was not lost on the residents. From mothers who no longer fear for their children’s health to farmers who now see possibilities for irrigation, the atmosphere was emotional and electric.
“This borehole is a gift to our children and our children’s children,” shared Ogbuenyi Anthony Nwegbu, President General, Illah Development Union of Nigeria (IDUN) Worldwide. “We are deeply grateful, and we pray that other organizations follow LG’s shining example.”
“This is more than water; it is life from the sun,” said Hon. John Azike, a community leader. “LG has not just quenched our thirst—they’ve rekindled our faith in a future where companies care about people.”
Songs of praise and cultural dances lit up the air as the community poured out their thanksnot just for the borehole, but for being seen, heard, and valued by a global brand.
For years, the Illah community battled the consequences of limited access to potable water—illnesses, missed school days, and economic setbacks.
The daily burden of fetching water, often borne by women and children, robbed many of time and opportunity.
But that changed when LG Electronics, under its CSR initiative, identified Illah as a community in urgent need. What followed was more than a donation it was an act of listening, understanding, and acting with empathy.
Among those present at the event were; Mr. Fadi Skaf, Manager, Fouani Nig. Ltd, Asaba Branch; Ogbuenyi Eugene Okondor, Community Leader; Comrade Celestine Azuka Obiokala, Secretary General, Illah Development Union of Nigeria (IDUN); Anthony Chuks Gab Iweiebo Wajama, Publicity Secretary IDUN; Hon. Ozo Njoagwani, Community Leader; and Hon. Zeal Ugbode, Ekene Isiekwe, and Anita Uju Okonta, (Councilors’ representing Illah)
