The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reaffirmed its commitment to using accurate and reliable measurement systems to support Nigeria’s economic and industrial growth.

Speaking at a press conference to commemorate World Metrology Day 2026, the Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, said measurement standards are essential to industrial development, consumer protection, fair trade and innovation.

Dr. Okeke explained that metrology, the science of measurement, provides the foundation for confidence in products, services, market transactions and public policy. He noted that reliable measurements help industries meet required standards, improve product quality, reduce trade disputes and strengthen consumer confidence.

Okeke said that captains of industries, policy makers, innovators, SMEs operators and business owners will gather in – C Event Centre in Abuja on the 20th May to  take key discussion on measurements to boost economic development

He urged all key stakeholders to attend to better their business

According to him, accurate and traceable measurements are also critical to national competitiveness, as they enable Nigerian products and services to meet both local and international requirements.

The Director-General added that SON is strengthening its measurement infrastructure and collaborating with relevant national and international bodies to promote fairness, transparency and confidence across key sectors of the economy.

World Metrology Day is marked globally on 20 May each year to highlight the importance of measurement science in everyday life, industry, trade, governance and sustainable development. The 2026 theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” underscores the role of reliable measurement in evidence-based decisions.

Dr. Okeke said SON would continue to support industries, regulators, consumers and policymakers with measurement standards that promote quality, safety and sustainable economic growth.
