The 26 Megawatts Akute Power Plant in Lagos is receiving attention, which is expected to improve electricity supply in the State.

Fenchurch Group has announced plans to rebuild the power station and provide dedicated electricity to major Lagos waterworks, with the first 10MW expected within four months.

The project, being developed by Fenchurch Power Limited through Aggregate Utilities Limited, the group’s special purpose vehicle, is being delivered under a concession agreement with the Lagos State Government.

The remaining 16MW is expected to be delivered within 12 months, while surplus power will be exported to the Ikeja Electric Network.

The project is expected to support the operation of the Akute intake, as well as the Iju and Adiyan waterworks, whose equipment depends heavily on electricity for water production.

Speaking during a stakeholder visit to the Oregun fabrication yard of Jubaili Bros, where equipment for the project was being prepared, Group Chief Executive Officer of Fenchurch Group, Olufemi Bakare, said the project was intended to keep the water infrastructure running reliably.

”Water needs power. Lagos State has invested significantly in its water infrastructure, and our mandate is to keep it running reliably round the clock,” he said.

Head of Production, Lagos Water Corporation, Agiri Mustafa, said reliable electricity was crucial to water production because most of the corporation’s equipment was power-driven.

He said the corporation would be the primary off-taker of the electricity when the equipment was installed. ‎”Power is a very crucial aspect of water production generally. Most of our equipment is power-driven,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has explained outage in parts of Port Harcourt and its environs which have been without bulk electricity supply since Monday after members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) shut down a key transmission line over a dispute with the management of Afam IV Power Station.

TCN said the disruption began on Monday, September 28, 2026, when NUEE members in Rivers State opened the Afam to Alaoji 330kV Transmission Line 2 at the Alaoji 330kV Transmission Substation.

The company linked the action to an ongoing labour dispute between the union and the management of Afam IV Gas Power Station.

TCN explained that the shutdown caused the 150MVA 330/132kV inter-bus transformer at Afam IV to trip, cutting bulk electricity transmission to parts of the city and surrounding areas.

The affected facilities include the Port Harcourt Town 132kV Transmission Substation and the Elelenwo 132kV Transmission Substation. The 60MVA 132/33kV transformer at the Port Harcourt Mains 132kV Transmission Substation was also affected.

The company said it is working with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), to bring the affected facilities back online. It added that restoration will happen as soon as conditions allow safe reconnection.

TCN apologised to electricity consumers in the affected areas for the inconvenience and promised to keep the public updated as the situation develops.
