The worrisome and rising cases of rape took on another new turn recently when a 12-year-old girl; was allegedly raped by four masked men on Thursday, June 4, 2020.

The PUNCH reports that the incident took place at her residence in Abijo, Ajah, Lagos State.

The 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped while playing alone in the compound around 2pm on Thursday. Equally important, the shocking incident is said to have left the minor in trauma.

Indeed, Nigerians have expressed outrage and worry over the incessant and growing incidences of rape. Just last week, news emerged of the brutal rape and murder of Vera Uwa Omozuwa; a 100 level student of the University of Benin. The incident occurred in a church in which she had gone to study.

Barely a few days after, a teenager, Barakat Bello was also brutally raped and murdered in Ibadan. The incident occurred after she allegedly resisted her attackers.

Meanwhile, the latest incident involving the 12-year-old has added to the disturbing trend.

The victim, who was reportedly left bleeding in her privates after the gang rape, is currently recuperating.

A correspondent of Saturday PUNCH who spoke to the victim’s mother, affirmed that the woman identified as Anthonia; was not around when the incident occurred.

“I went to the office and was called (on the phone) and told that my daughter was raped in our house,” the mother said.

”I learnt she was having her online class when suddenly, there was a power outage. My husband rushed out to get fuel at a filling station so that she could participate in the class seamlessly.’’

The mother told the medium that while the 12-year-old girl was in the compound; four masked men scaled a fence and gained access into the compound. Thereafter, they took the girl inside and proceeded to gang rape her in turns; leaving her with multiple injuries.

“Immediately I received the call, I became so mad. I headed for the hospital where my daughter was rushed to. When I got there, I was told she suffered ‘vaginal trauma’. The underneath of her clitoris was bruised and she had a deep tear that made her bleed severely.

‘‘She could have passed out if not that her dad got back home early. She lost a lot of blood. The bleeding stopped after the tear was stitched; although, she is still experiencing very severe pain,” the mother added.

Meanwhile, the mother who disclosed that the case had been reported at the Ajiwe Police Station, claimed that the incident has left the family feeling insecure.

“I don’t think we are secure anymore because it seems like we are being monitored. They perpetuated their evil within the few minutes it took my husband to buy fuel.

“They could not enter through the gate because of an ongoing construction at a building opposite ours. The site was crowded and that made them avoid entering through the front door. They scaled the fence. Some policemen followed us to the house and saw how the attackers scattered our things around.”

The PUNCH reports that investigation is currently ongoing to unravel the suspects. This was confirmed by spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana.

However, he revealed that the case was a complicated one in view of the fact that the perpetrators wore face masks; a fact that makes it more difficult to identify them.
