Countries in Africa would be converging in South Africa to advance their knowledge in the integration of AI-driven grid management and advanced telecommunications solutions which is revolutionising energy systems worldwide.
These technologies are critical enablers for enhancing grid reliability, optimising energy distribution, and protecting infrastructure in an increasingly complex energy landscape.
The T&D Africa Conference, to be hosted on the 6th March 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, will host a pivotal session titled “Enabling AI, Grid Operation, and Protection via Telecom Solutions”, bringing this essential conversation to the forefront.
The opportunity its coming as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe on Tuesday in Abuja, disclosed that the use of substandard equipment in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, is one of the major causes of frequent collapse of the national electricity grid.
Sen. Abaribe who disclosed this at the 2024 stakeholders roundtable on the enforcement of technical standards, regulations and mandates of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, NEMSA, urged the Agency to closely monitor operators to ensure that standard equipment were used in the industry.
This highly anticipated conference session will explore the roles, strategies, and technologies that underpin telecommunications as a backbone for advanced grid operations. As Africa’s power systems evolve to meet growing demand and the challenges of integrating renewable energy, the synergy between AI, telecommunications, and grid protection becomes indispensable.
Key topics include: AI-Powered Grid Optimisation: Leveraging machine learning and predictive analytics to improve energy flow, reduce outages, and enhance grid resilience, Telecom Solutions for Real-Time Grid Monitoring: Deploying high-speed communication networks for real-time data exchange, fault detection, and remote grid management, Grid Protection Strategies: Utilising telecom-enabled automation to safeguard infrastructure against disruptions and cyber threats and Role of IoT in Grid Connectivity: Integrating smart devices and sensors into grids for seamless monitoring and operation.
Africa’s energy systems face unique challenges, from ensuring universal access to managing the complexities of renewable energy integration.
Advanced telecom solutions, combined with AI capabilities, enable real-time monitoring and intelligent decision-making, addressing these challenges with precision.
These innovations not only bolster grid reliability but also play a critical role in achieving Africa’s broader energy and sustainability goals.
The T&D Africa Conference serves as a premier gathering of energy professionals, technology innovators, and policymakers focused on shaping the future of transmission and distribution across the continent.
This session will provide a platform to discuss cutting-edge developments in AI and telecom applications, explore case studies of successful deployments in grid operation and protection and facilitate collaboration between energy stakeholders and telecom providers.
