A new wave of collaboration is sweeping across Africa’s energy industry operators with the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) in a latest move have announced its plans to meet in Egypt to address critical energy development challenges of the continent.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt, Karim Badawi, has signified his country’s hosting a high-level ministerial meeting for members of the APPO in Alamein this June.

The meeting, to be held in conjunction with the African Union’s Mid-Year Coordination Summit, aims to establish a unified platform for coordinating infrastructure financing and energy security across the continent, noted a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources(MoPMR).

This came during a meeting with Farid Ghazali,  APPO Secretary General, and other senior African oil and gas officials. They discussed the latest developments in launching the African Energy Bank, one of APPO’s initiatives in partnership with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to address the critical financing needs of Africa’s oil, gas, and broader energy sectors.

In a move aiming for regional capacity building, APPO announced the launch of a new African training platform scheduled to go live by the end of 2026.

Ghazali lauded Egypt’s advanced infrastructure and confirmed that the organization would leverage Egyptian technical centers to support this continent-wide initiative.

Badawi stressed that Egypt possesses a strong base of national companies specialized in executing oil and gas infrastructure projects, notably the Engineering for the Petroleum and Process Industries Company (ENPPI), the Petroleum Projects and Technical Consultations Company (PETROJET), Egyptian Projects Operation and Maintenance (EPROM), and Egyptian Maintenance Company (EMC), in addition to the Egyptian Drilling Company (EDC), and Modern Drilling Company (MDC).

These companies have successfully implemented major projects both inside and outside Egypt, reinforcing their capability to contribute to energy and infrastructure projects across the African continent, while supporting development plans and facilitating expertise transfer, according to Badawi.

The discussions underscored a shift toward regional self-reliance, with a focus on securing the funding necessary to transition African mineral wealth into domestic energy security.

This collaboration aligns with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR )’s broader strategy to position Egypt as a technical and logistical hub for the Mediterranean and African energy markets.

APPO, founded in 1987 in Lagos, Nigeria, serves as a platform for cooperation and joint efforts among 18 African oil-producing countries, including Egypt, with headquarters in Brazzaville, Congo.
