..As It Moves To Replace Dirty Naira Notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has demanded reports from the public of banks rejecting dirty naira notes as it steps up efforts to mop up dirty and mutilated notes from circulation.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement session in Lagos over the weekend, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, director of corporate communication of the CBN, disclosed that the apex bank has given Deposit Money Banks, DMBs, from June 3 to September 2 to return all mutilated Naira notes in their custody for reissue.

Okorafor said “We are telling all customers including labor to return all dirty Naira notes to their banks and the banks will bring those notes to us for reissue and if any bank is refusing to take those notes, they should call us and we will take action on that”.

He further mentioned that the meeting with leaders of the organized labor is part of CBN’s communication campaign to constantly engage with critical stakeholders of the economy.

“Here we have met with organized labors in the South West, last week we were in Owerri, South South and South East. We are constantly engaging on CBN activities, what our duties are, what we have done in the last five years and what we are going to do in the next five years. And to also get feedback from those that will form part of our programs in the next five years.” he said.

In his response Issa Aremu, the Vice President industrial trade union said the organized labor are satisfied with what CBN has achieved in the last five years and are willing to partner with them.

“We should partner with CBN as organized labor to realize its developmental finance and other policies”. Comrade Aremu said
