The Customs Area Controller of Apapa Command, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, called on newly promoted Deputy and Assistant Comptrollers to embrace innovation, integrity, and lifelong learning as they step into greater responsibilities within the Nigeria Customs Service.
At the opening of a special training session on Wednesday, Oshoba congratulated the officers on their well-deserved promotions, describing the advancement not only as recognition of their hard work but also as a call to serve with renewed dedication.
He reminded the officers that their new roles carry high expectations from both the Customs Service and the nation. He urged them to demonstrate excellence, discipline, and a strong commitment to the modernization vision championed by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
“These promotions bring opportunities, challenges, and increased responsibility,” Oshoba said. “The service demands your commitment, fresh ideas, and a deep dedication to advancing the CGC’s reform agenda.”
Highlighting the evolving nature of Customs operations, he pointed out the shift to knowledge-driven methods, referencing key modernization tools like the Advance Ruling System, Time Release Study, the Authorized Economic Operator programme, and the One Stop Shop initiative. He challenged the officers to master these tools to boost efficiency, compliance, and risk management.
Oshoba also warned about ongoing compliance issues, stressing that officers must stay vigilant and make smart use of technology to assess risks effectively.
“This training is a valuable chance to grow professionally,” he added. “Use it to exchange ideas, build networks, and enhance teamwork and leadership across Commands.”
The Comptroller further reminded them of the critical trust placed in their hands, including roles responsible for sensitive duties such as managing release passwords and supervising junior officers. “Justice and honesty must guide all your actions. These are the core values that define our Service.”
Reassuring all attendees, Oshoba emphasized that continuous capacity building remains a top priority for the Nigeria Customs Service, ensuring the institution’s excellence through ongoing training.
“To the glory of God and the benefit of everyone here, I officially open this course,” he concluded.
Held at the Apapa Area Command headquarters, the training session is designed to equip the newly promoted officers with advanced knowledge and leadership skills vital for driving Customs modernization and improving trade facilitation across Nigeria.
