The Congress of Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) is set to hold its 2026 Annual General Meeting, Lecture and Awards Ceremony over two days in Lagos, with maritime security taking centre stage as the nation prepares for electioneering season.

The event, themed “Maritime Security, Trade Facilitation & The Media,” will examine the dangers of small arms and hard drugs proliferation while exploring strategies to reduce this menace to minimum levels. The lecture will highlight media’s crucial role in supporting security agencies at borders, particularly customs officials, in combating smuggling activities.

CONMMEP General Secretary Mr. Lod Onyeji announced that the gathering will enable members to review the association’s activities, recognise outstanding contributions to the maritime industry, and chart strategic direction for the future.

Day 1 activities on Thursday, June 25, 2026, will commence at 10:00 a.m. at Presken Hotel, Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos, opposite Lagos Airport Hotel. The programme features a keynote lecture titled “The Role of Media in Curbing Smuggling in Nigeria’s Maritime Corridor” delivered by renowned maritime stakeholder Fwrd. Eugene Nweke, PFF. An Awards Ceremony will also honour officers and individuals who have distinguished themselves through exceptional service to the maritime sector.

Day 2 will focus on the AGM and Strategy Planning Session, scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at a venue to be communicated. This strictly internal session will provide members with platforms to deliberate on the association’s growth, development, and future direction.

CONMMEP President Mr. Udo Onyeka emphasised the AGM’s significance as a vital forum for strengthening professional collaboration among maritime media practitioners and advancing initiatives supporting the maritime industry. “Members are encouraged to make adequate arrangements to attend and contribute meaningfully to discussions that will shape the future of CONMMEP and maritime media practice,” Onyeka stated.

The Secretariat has urged all members to attend both sessions punctually and participate actively, with attendance strictly recorded for proper documentation. Members are expected to be seated before activities commence.

The two-day event underscores CONMMEP’s commitment to addressing critical maritime security challenges while promoting trade facilitation through effective media advocacy and professional collaboration among maritime media practitioners.
