Justice, Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, July 23, convicted ten Nigerian pirates and committed them to prison for 12 years each.

The Court held that they hijacked a Chinese merchant vessel FV Hailufeng II in the Gulf of Guinea in 2020.

Justice Faji, also fined each of them N250,000.

In his comment, a spokesman for the Nigerian Navy, Suleman Dahun, who was acting as prosecutor, said, the ruling was “a major victory for Nigeria’s new anti-piracy law,” .

The Nigerian Navy rescued 18 crew members onboard the Chinese vessel from pirates on May 15, 2020; and arrested the 10 pirates.
