COVID-19: Nigeria’s Insurance Sector Offers N11Bn Cover For Health Workers

The Nigerian Insurance Industry is providing Life Insurance Cover to the frontline workers on COVID 19, and has offered an estimated liability of N11 billion (N11,000,000,000).

The Life Insurance Cover is for a maximum of 5000 health workers who are employed in the fight against COVID 19.

Under the arrangement the next of kin of a medical doctor who dies while providing care to Covid-19 patients would collect N3 million.

Other beneficiaries in the scheme as announced by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) are Nurses and pharmacists who will collect N2 million while the rest will collect N1 million benefit each in the event of any fatality.

Acting-Insurance Commissioner, Sunday Thomas who announced this Friday stated that the premium calculated to be N112.5 million had been paid by the industry.

In event of any fatality the relevant agencies of government will immediately advise the lead Underwriter – FBN Insurance Ltd who will make request for relevant documents needed for payment of the claim.

The cover is for a period of 12months effective 14th April, 2020.
