Econet Wireless unit Distributed Power Africa (DPA) has entered into an agreement with French electricity provider EDF to establish commercial and industrial hybrid energy services for the African market.
The partnership is considering Nigeria as top priority given the size of her market.
DPA and EDF in a statement said they plan to set up power businesses in various African countries with countries like Nigeria and Ivory Coast high on their priority list. They intend to accelerate the deployment and roll-out of green energy across Africa, with EDF acting as a technology partner for DPA projects in Africa.
The two firms said the collaboration was expected to focus on developing energy services such as solar panels, as well as energy back-up systems such as batteries. The companies plan to deploy their products in sub-Saharan Africa, initially in South Africa, the Ivory Coast and Nigeria, with the intention to expand into other key markets.
