A medical expert with Federal Neuro -Psychiatric hospital, Kaduna, Dr Lubuola issa- Bamidele, has called for prompt management of depression among inmates of correctional facilities.
Issa-Bamidele made this call during a presentation on Monday in Kaduna, at the 2021 Scientific Conference of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna Chapter.
According to him, depression among inmates of correctional facilities is rampant and needs prompt management to mitigate the burden and improve inmates quality of life.
Issa-Bamidele said that the prevalence of depression among the inmates was 52.5 per cent, adding that few cases were detected and treated.
”Despite the high prevalence, staff may not recognise depression as a mental disorder and the mental health care available is generally poor.
“Inmates should be screened routinely for depression and other less-commonly recognised mental health conditions and appropriate treatment made available,” he said.. (NAN)
