The International Center for Energy, Environment and Development Foundation (ICEED Foundation) with support from the European Union  has announced the successful completion of the installation 5KVA solar systems in public health institutions in 3 Local Government Areas of Borno State.

The institutions include Biu Maternal and Child Health Center, Biu Township Primary Health Center (Biu LGA), General Hospital Marama (Hawul LGA), General Hospital Kwaya Kusar and Wandali Primary Health Care, Wandali (Kwaya Kusar LGA).

Speaking during the handing over and lightning of Marama General Hospital, Hawul LGA, the Project Advisor, Mr. Okechukwu Ugwu said, “We are happy to that this project is successfully completed.

When we conducted our baseline study, prior to this part of the project, we noted that this hospital have less than 6 hours power supply from the grid, which was not even regular. Sometimes, pregnant women in labour are attended to in the night with candle lights, especially when there is no power supply from the grid. We are glad that this solar system will solve that aspect of the hospitals problem and let some staff and patients have access to use minor electrical gadgets in the hospital.”

The Secretary of the hospital, Mr. Mustapha Adamu expressed his profound appreciation to the European Union and ICEED for providing this much needed life-saving solar electricity for the hospital. He noted that the hospital hitherto provided only skeletal services at night owing to the epileptic electricity supply from the grid which is most times not available. With the provision of the solar electricity, the hospital is now able to conduct delivery of babies at night and also perform after-dark patient stabilization procedures.

The provision of the solar electricity across is expecially peculiar because it was carried out almost exclusively by young men and women of these LGAs. This is part of the life enhancing skills and new vocations being encouraged among youths affected by the Boko Haram insurgency and Nigeria in general. It signposts a positive step for the recovery of people around this area.”
