The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the Commission’s focus on preparations for the 2027 general elections, even as it concludes arrangements for the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Prof. Amupitan made the remarks while responding to a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) resident in Plateau State, led by Pius A. Akubo, SAN, who visited the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja to congratulate him on his appointment as INEC Chairman on Wednesday, 15th July, 2026.
He appealed to Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to continue supporting and praying for the Commission as it carries out its constitutional mandate ahead of the forthcoming polls.
The INEC Chairman also commended the National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides for their unwavering support, describing them as the “generals” behind the success of recent elections.
Presenting a congratulatory card on behalf of the Plateau SANs, Akubo described Prof. Amupitan’s appointment as a historic milestone for the North-Central region and for Nigeria’s democracy, and prayed for divine guidance and protection over him as he leads the Commission.
Responding, Prof. Amupitan expressed appreciation for the visit, describing the Plateau SANs as family and recalling his professional roots within the legal community in the state. He paid tribute to senior advocates from Plateau State who have since passed on, describing their loss as a painful one for the legal profession.
