The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has issued a warning to his staff against manipulating election results or engaging in activities capable of undermining the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Amupitan gave the warning while addressing INEC staff in Ekiti State as part of preparations for the forthcoming governorship election.
He stressed that any staff found culpable of electoral malpractice would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The INEC chairman reminded electoral officers of their responsibilitiesunder the Electoral Act and urged them to conduct themselves professionally throughout the election period.
He also assured staff that the commission would recognise and reward outstanding performance, including granting double promotions where necessary.
Professor Amupitan described the Ekiti governorship election as a major test case ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that the credibility of the poll would strengthen public confidence in the electoral system.
He further assured workers that the commission’s management was making efforts to improve their salary structure nationwide once the financial situation of the commission improves.
