CBN Says abokiFX Is Being Investigated For Fraudulent Forex Deal
Yemisi Izuora
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, said it is investigating abokiFX over suspected illegal foreign exchange transactions.
Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Bank confirmed the investigation of Oniwinde Adedotun, the founder of abokiFX.
According to a statement issued by the CBN Governor on Friday, September 17, Adedotun and abokiFX Limited are currently under investigation for “illegal foreign exchange transactions”.
AbokiFX is a web platform that reports movements in the foreign exchange market since as early as 2014.
On the platform, Naira is quoted at 570 to the dollar at the parallel market, though the apex bank had described it as an illegitimate market.
“The only exchange rate remains the I&E window, which is the market we expect everybody who wishes to procure or sell forex to get it,” Emefiele said.
“I am sorry to say that I do not, and I do not intend to recognise any fx in the market.
“Go to your bank. Even if your limit is above what the bank is selling, put it forward, and we will look into it.
“If you want to sell the dollar, go to your bank and sell it.”
Emefiele said the CBN had been investigating the abokiFX website and its owners in the last two years.
“We have been studying the activities of abokiFX in the last two years,” he added.
“There was a time we asked our colleagues to call the abokiFX to ask how he conducts the rates.
“He is a Nigerian, living in England, we will track him, Oniwinde, we will track you.
“We cannot allow you to continue to kill our economy.”
The CBN Governor added that abokiFX is registered in the United Kingdom in November 2015; and it is owned by one person, who claimed that there are other people with significant interests behind the business.
“On UK filing, we will go and conclude the investigation,” he assured.
“He has over 25 bank accounts in Nigeria both naira and dollar collection FX through a particular ATM in London.”
Emefiele alleged that Oniwinde uses his website for forex manipulations and speculations by purchasing forex to make a profit.
“It is completely illegal and unacceptable.”
“We’ve been investigating Aboki FX for two and half years. He lives in UK but has a Nigerian address. We have detected that he is an economic saboteur. Mr Oniwinde, we will find you.
“Our preliminary investigations show a lot about him. Those who want to sabotage the country and sabotage the efforts of this administration will be dealt with.
“Aboki FX was registered in the UK in 2015. He doesn’t want to name those behind him. He has 25 accounts. Shows illicit activities
“His website is used for manipulation by changing the rate over a given period. We will pursue and get them.
Mr Oniwinde directly benefits from the rates he quotes. How does he get his data? How many BDC staff come to ask for daily rate? How many BDCs supply him information? In which country does an unlicensed operator determine rates? Why target Nigeria. It’s pure economic sabotage and we will get them.
“CBN Act Section 2 states that only the CBN can determine rates. So, we will not allow this to continue. How does he collect his data. If he doesn’t come out. We will go after him”, Emefiele stated.
The CBN Governor added that the MPC wants further measures to be taken to drive down inflation while maintaining adequate surveillance on banks with compliance on loan disbursement without being exposed to unhealthy risks.
