The NBS in a report on “Consumer Expenditure Pattern in Nigeria” , which was released on Friday said that 43.35 per cent of the N40.2 trillion was spent on non food items.
“Food consumed outside the home, followed by transportation costs and starchy roots, tubers and plantains were responsible for the largest proportion of household expenditure representing a combined 24.16 per cent of total household expenditure in 2019,” the NBS added.
According to the NBS, the consumption of starchy roots, tubers and plantains, rice, vegetables, fish and seafood, grains and flours respectively led the consumption for food items.
The NBS said, “starchy roots, tubers and plantains, rice, vegetables, fish and seafood, grains and flours in that order were the top food items households spent on in 2019 accounting for a combined 59.19 per cent of food expenditure and 33.53 per cent of total household expenditure on food and 24.8 per cent of total household expenditure.”
NBS said 79.4 per cent of the amount spent on non- food items were spent specifically on transport, health, education, information technology and communication equipment as well as things like insurance, financial services, rent, fuel and light.
