NCAA Fines Qatar Airways N5million For Aviation Regulations Breach

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a N5 million penalty on Qatar Airways after the carrier was found to have breached the nation’s aviation regulations during a recent operation at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The fine, announced on Tuesday by the authority’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, follows an investigation that revealed the airline’s failure to submit required documentation for a scheduled cargo flight, a violation of the Civil Aviation Act and the NCAA’s safety oversight guidelines.

In a statement, Achimugu said the authority had given Qatar Airways a 30‑day window to settle the fine, warning that further non‑compliance could result in additional sanctions, including suspension of the airline’s operating permit in Nigeria.

“Our regulatory framework is in place to ensure safety and fairness for all operators in Nigerian airspace,” Achimugu said. “When any carrier, regardless of its size or origin, fails to adhere to these standards, the NCAA will act decisively.”

Qatar Airways, which operates several weekly passenger and cargo services between Doha and Lagos, responded through its regional communications office. The airline expressed disappointment over the penalty and emphasised its commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

“We respect the NCAA’s mandate and are reviewing the matter to understand the specifics of the alleged breach,” the statement read. “Qatar Airways remains fully cooperative with Nigerian authorities and will take all necessary steps to resolve the issue promptly.”

The fine comes amid a broader effort by the NCAA to tighten oversight of foreign carriers operating in Nigeria, following a series of incidents that prompted heightened scrutiny of airline practices.

Industry analysts note that the penalty, while significant, is proportionate to the regulatory infractions reported and serves as a reminder to all airlines of the importance of adhering to local aviation laws.

Qatar Airways has been a key link between West Africa and the Middle East, and the outcome of this dispute could influence the carrier’s operational planning in the region.

As the 30‑day payment deadline approaches, both the NCAA and Qatar Airways are expected to engage in further dialogue to ensure full compliance and maintain the smooth flow of air traffic between Nigeria and Qatar.
