Niger: 15 persons in Police net over alleged kidnapping, cattle rustling

The Police Command in Niger has arrested 15 persons over alleged kidnapping, cattle rustling, armed robbery and human trafficking, its commissioner, Monday Kuryas, has announced.

Kuryas, while presenting the suspects to newsmen on Wednesday in Minna, said that 10 were nabbed over alleged  kidnapping in Lapai.

“On Nov. 6, information was received from a credible source that suspected gunmen invaded Sonfada village, Lapai and abducted two victims to Sonfada forest.

“We quickly despatched a joint Police/Vigilantes team from Lapai division to the forest. After a sustained pressure on the hoodlums, the two victims were rescued unhurt while 10 suspects were arrested with 500 cows.

“Also recovered from the suspects were two motorcycles, a sum of N 250,00 and five cutlasses.

“Similarly, two suspected kidnappers and human traffickers were arrested at Magama Local Government Area following a complaint reported at the District Police Division in Nasko.

“The complainant claimed that he received an anonymous letter demanding for four million naira with a threat to  kidnap him if he failed to comply with the order.

“Working on a tip off, Police operatives attached to Nasko Division arrested two suspects – Samaila Makeri and Auna

Musa Umar – over the crime.”

He said that during interrogation, the two suspects confessed to the crime.

He explained that Samaila Makeri also confessed to being a human trafficker as he had trafficked 30 teenagers from Kebbi and Niger to Kwara and Oyo States.

Kuryas said that three suspected kidnappers were also arrested at Ibeto in Nasko Local Government.

The commissioner said that the suspects would be arraigned after investigation, and solicited the support of residents in the effort to rid the society of miscreants. (NAN)
