Nigerian Universities Union Announces Strike Action

The National leadership of the Joint Action Committee of Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
(SSANU) have called for a strike action over slow pace of Renegotiation of 2009
Agreements for the Non-Teaching Staff Unions.
President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Comrade Peters Adeyémi, released a joint statement announcing the decision.
The Unions said all branches of SSANU and NASU have been directed to commence total strike in all Universities and Inter-University Centres campuses from 12:00a.m. of 1st of May, 2026.
NASU & SSANU had earlier held a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Ahmad, Permanent Secretaries, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Abel Enitan; the Executive Secretaries, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Abdullahi Ribadu to forestall the strike.
The Unions also raised the issues bothering on withdrawal of the 30% CONTTA award letter in circulation.
SSANU and NASU maintained that only full approval of their demands as contained in its letters to the government will make them to consider the strike.
The statement urged all NASU & SSANU members to comply with the directive for the survival and existence of the system.
The National Monitoring Teams have been set up to monitor the effectiveness of the strike.
According to the statement, any branch of NASU & SSANU in the Federal Universities, Inter-University Centres as well as State Universities found culpable of granting concessions or breaching the strike will be severely sanctioned.
