The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has signed a Contribution Agreement with Netherlands in respect of its project on Strengthening Persons with Disabilities Advocacy Capacity in Nigeria.
The document to that effect was presented by the Second Secretary to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Abuja, Ms. Angelique van Made during a working visit to CCD secretariat in Lagos.
This was sequel to the signing of the agreement by Ambassador John Groffen and Mr. David O. Anyaele, Executive Director, Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Abuja.
The project which will be implemented in Abuja FCT, Lagos and Abia States for 48 months is aimed at ensuring that capacity of organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) is developed in the field of lobbying and advocacy, in order to contribute to a strong and lively civil society which holds the public and private sector accountable.
The secondary Objectives of the project will help to Improve OPDs capacity to create change in areas critical to the wellbeing of their constituency, improve collaboration between OPDs, CSOs and State actors on good governance and accountability and raise awareness on advocacy/lobby activities of CSOs among state and non-state actors.
The project is in line with CCD objectives which include to initiate and implement programmes, policies and activities geared toward the promotion and enhancement of the welfare of persons with disabilities, empower or assist in empowering persons with disabilities and regularly access the impact of public policy on human rights and report on same through publications seminars and workshops and lectures to educate, sensitise, counsel and mobilize persons with disabilities in various areas critical to their survival and progress and support and advocate for respect for the rule of law and due process.
Activities mapped out for the project include: Mapping and training of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPD) in the project states on Advocacy/Lobbying; Advocacy Visits to 5 line Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in each of the project states; Stakeholders Forum on Disability & Good Governance in each of the project states; and OPD/CSOs Experience Sharing in each of the project states. Others include: project Publicity on website, social media platforms; and regular Media briefing on the project in the project states as well as production of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials which will be distributed to each of the project states and Abuja FCT.
