The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) strengthen partnership to improve earth system observations for the development of national socioeconomic sectors. This commitment was made during the courtesy visit of the Director General/Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Mathew Adepoju, to the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike on Thursday 9th July 2026.

As scientific organisations, both institutions, while unique in their individual peculiarities, acknowledge the strength of their collaborations in leveraging on each other’s mandate to provide accurate and reliable earth system observations in Nigeria. The DG NiMet while assuring his counterpart of the Agency’s support in reinforcing the existing relationship, also stressed the critical importance of meteorological observations in national development bordering on safety of lives and property, climate smart decisions for community resilience, and strengthening anticipatory actions. He assured of the Agency’s conscious effort toward technology adoption including Artificial Intelligence to improve service delivery.

The DG/CE NASRDA called for collaboration with NiMet on the development of a meteorological satellite thereby making Nigeria a pacesetter on space weather observation on the continent. Other areas of collaboration include meteorological support to the operationalisation Hot-Air Ballons, Knowledge and Skills development including training opportunities.

The two Chief Executives, while emphasising the need for increased private sector involvement in earth observation systems, agreed to formalise the relationship by revisiting the memorandum of understanding with a view to making it forward looking and actionable to scale up their contributions to sustainable national socioeconomic development that can be quantified.
