To stem the tide of medical tourism and its attendant capital flight, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has invited Indian hospital groups to participate in its proposed health management business.
NNPC has 12 strategic business units, including commercial investments and the health management business will be a new unit with a new subsidiary company. The health management business will be a one-stop-shop for medical care in Nigeria.
Group managing director of NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, explains; “I am looking forward to having Indian health companies partner with us in the area of health care to upgrade NNPC Hospitals to a level where they can handle medical emergencies in-country.
Indian business can look beyond oil and gas in its dealings with NNPC as we are on the verge of retooling its non-core businesses to be revenue earners in line with the drive to make the corporation profitable.”
NNPC Medical Services operates clinics, mainly for NNPC employees and families in Abuja and Lagos and other locations within Nigeria.
So far, there has been no known response from Indian hospital groups.
