The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau and the Lagos State Waterways Authority have agreed to deepen collaboration aimed at improving safety standards, strengthening incident investigations, and boosting operational efficiency across Lagos waterways.
The discussion took place on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, during a courtesy visit by NSIB to LASWA headquarters in Lagos. Both agencies focused on ways to improve safety oversight, share information more effectively, build capacity, and create stronger systems for accident prevention and response in the inland waterways sector.
LASWA General Manager and Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, welcomed the NSIB delegation and said inter-agency cooperation is essential to the state government’s plan for safe, efficient, and sustainable water transportation.
He noted that the waterways remain a vital part of Lagos transportation and said stakeholders must work together to promote safety, operational excellence, and public confidence.
NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh led the visiting delegation and said the bureau’s mandate is to promote transport safety through independent investigations and safety recommendations. He added that working with LASWA would help identify risks, prevent accidents, and strengthen safety culture on the waterways.
The two agencies discussed possible areas of collaboration, including exchange of safety data, joint awareness campaigns, training programmes, incident reporting systems, emergency response coordination, and technical support for accident investigation and safety management.
Both sides expressed commitment to maintaining a strong working relationship that will support safer waterways operations and the continued growth of water transportation in Lagos State.
The visit ended with an agreement to sustain engagement and pursue practical initiatives that will improve safety for operators, passengers, and other waterways users.
