The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senatorial candidate for Lagos Central, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, has implored President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct (CCT) forthwith.
He said the trial is capable of setting Nigeria on fire and scuttle our hard earned democracy that ‘we fought for with our blood.’
In statement in Lagos yesterday, Chief Onitiri warned that the timing of the trial smarks of political undertone.
The president should emulate the exemplary precedent former President Goodluck Jonathan left behind by leaving power without shedding the blood of any innocent Nigerians, he advised.
According to him, Nigeria is greater than anybody and that power is transient. Nobody is saying that the CJN is right or wrong, but the timing is wrong, he emphasised.
Our democracy should be nurtured and not destroyed. All the three pillars of democracy should be independent of one another; the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. None should be allowed to cow the other’ he also advised.
Nigeria is not a banana republic where you trample on the rule of law. The present trial of our CJN is totally in bad taste as Nigerians see it as an attempt to perpetuate
APC rule on the country which will be resisted by all patriotic citizens.
“I therefore call on President Buhari to make this election peaceful, credible, free and fair. This country belongs to all of us’ Chief Sunbo Onitiri stated.
President should not be desperate to retain power by all means.
