Alleged extortion by Policemen attached to the Presidential Taskforce on Apapa decongestion got to a head Wednesday night, after one of the truck drivers simply identified as Adamu was shot dead.
Sources said the Policemen had over time collected toll ranging from N100,000 to N170, 000, each from the drivers on a ‘first pay first serve basis’ to enter the Apapa port.
But Sources said trouble broke out yesterday after the Policemen increased the toll collection to N200,000 per truck to the chagrin of the drivers. It as not too clear how the deceased person was shot dead but an eyewitness informed that some of the aggrieved drivers had accused the Policemen of lopsidedness in selecting which driver should be allowed into the port even after paying such huge sums; resulting in sporadic gunshots.
A video clip going viral online made showed a police patrol vehicle badly vandalized while the corpse of the truck driver lay on its trunk.
Frantic efforts to get the reaction of the Command PRO SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on the incident was not successful but a source close to his office which confirmed it said the Commissioner of Police CP Hakeem Odumosu had been fully briefed on the incident adding, “The CP is aware of that matter and I think it is being handled.”
