Falsification of fake motor papers has prompted insurance operators, under the auspices of the Nigerian Insurers Association, NIA, to launch a campaign tagged ‘Wetin U Carry’ where vehicle owners can confirm the authenticity of their insurance papers by dialing *565*11# on their phones.
Speaking on this development yesterday at a media briefing to unveil the initiative in Lagos, the director-general, NIA, Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, said the 2.53 million vehicles registered on the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database (NIID) are those with genuine insurance papers, noting that, most motorists are either uninsured or parading fake insurance certificates.
She warned motorists with fake vehicle certificates not to expect claims when accident happens, unlike those with genuine insurance certificates, urging vehicle owners to confirm the genuineness of their insurance coverage through the aforementioned code.
Ilori, further stated that the rationale behind the initiative was to remind motorists the importance of regular checking to know the status of the insurance cover of their vehicles.
The campaign with it’s pilot phase starting in Lagos from October 2, 2019, will be driven through the media, billboards which has been mounted strategically in Lagos Island and Ikeja.
She noted that 33 people will be kitted for the exercise, to move from different locations within the state, interacting with people in a friendly manner, educating them on the need to procure genuine insurance.
“What we are looking at in this campaign is that we have a slogan “Wetin U Carry?” This slogan is what we want to be in the lip of everybody so that by the time you see a vehicle, the next thing you say is “wetin you carry?
“Not in terms of expecting something from you, but to say, are you carrying the genuine insurance cover, or you are having fake?
Speaking further, Ilori assured that shortly into the campaign, the association will launch a unified platform, where people could purchase insurance online as well as lodge complaints if any.
She equally assured that the insurance companies that sell motor insurance will be uploaded into the platform.
“This is to enable people know where they can buy genuine insurance because if people know where to buy genuine insurance, they will not be patronizing those that sell fake.
The platform is going to go beyond buying insurance alone, it will also provide opportunity for people to lodge their complaints”, she said.
