Saudi Aramco Evaluates Alternative Oil Export Strategy To Strengthen Supply Security

As tanker traffic limits following growing insecurity along the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Aramco is evaluating additional crude oil export routes and expanded overseas storage capacity.

Report indicates that disruptions to Middle Eastern energy transportation highlight the importance of reliable supply networks and alternative shipping options.

Speaking at the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh on Monday, Aramco President and CEO Amin Nasser said the company is examining ways to strengthen its export flexibility while maintaining deliveries to international customers.

The initiative comes as ongoing regional conflicts and restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz continue to disrupt global petroleum trade. The strategic waterway normally handles a significant portion of internationally traded crude oil, making alternative transportation routes increasingly important for major producers and importing countries.

Aramco’s existing East-West pipeline provides an important alternative by transporting crude from Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province to export facilities at Yanbu on the Red Sea. The system allows shipments to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, although other regional maritime routes also face security risks.

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said Monday that the kingdom is considering increasing its pipeline export capacity to as much as 10 million barrels per day over the next two to three years.

The proposed expansion would involve infrastructure upgrades and potentially repurposing an existing natural gas pipeline to transport crude temporarily. According to the minister, the conversion could add approximately 1.2 million barrels per day of capacity within seven to eight weeks, while additional investments could increase capacity further.

Separately, Aramco is reviewing opportunities to expand storage facilities outside Saudi Arabia. Overseas inventories can help the company maintain deliveries during temporary shipping disruptions and provide additional flexibility in serving major consuming markets.

The company has previously identified storage operations in Asia, including Japan and South Korea, as important components of its international supply network.

The broader strategy reflects a growing emphasis on transportation resilience across the oil and gas industry. Recent disruptions have demonstrated that production capacity alone does not guarantee reliable deliveries when pipelines, ports, or maritime corridors are constrained.

For oil producers, additional export options could reduce dependence on individual transportation routes and improve operational flexibility. However, developing new pipelines and storage facilities requires substantial capital investment, regulatory approvals, and long-term commercial planning.

Midstream companies, engineering contractors, and energy infrastructure providers could see opportunities associated with pipeline upgrades, pumping stations, storage terminals, and related transportation projects.

Refiners and international crude buyers may also benefit from more diversified supply routes, particularly when disruptions affect established shipping corridors.

For investors, Aramco’s plans highlight the increasing importance of infrastructure reliability alongside production capacity and commodity prices. Transportation flexibility can influence realized crude prices, operating costs, and the ability of producers to maintain sales during periods of market disruption.

The proposed investments could also affect long-term capital allocation as major energy companies balance upstream development with spending on logistics and supply security.

While Aramco has not announced final investment decisions or construction schedules for additional export routes, the company’s evaluation underscores the industry’s changing approach to managing geopolitical and transportation risks.

The next developments to watch include specific project announcements, capital commitments, and progress toward expanding Saudi Arabia’s pipeline and overseas storage capabilities
