Unknown gunmen have reportedly killed scores of Policemen and soldiers in different locations in Anambra State during attacks on Thursday afternoon.
While the policemen were killed in Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area at a checkpoint, the soldiers were killed at an outpost in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, both of Anambra State.
The hoodlums also set ablaze a Police van in Neni, while carting away arms belonging to the slain policemen, in Awkuzu,
Motive of the attack, including the identity of the attackers were yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.
The spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, said the Command has received the report and was working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the report.
“We are still working and trailing the news, I hope to get back to you soon, when the details are complete,” he said.
There have been incidences of attacks and killing of security operatives in Anambra in the last two months.
The statement by Tochukwu stated: There was attack on Police patrol team at Okacha junction Neni, Anaocha local government area by yet to be identified gunmen while on nipping point, the hoodlums numbering over twenty with three Sienna buses and motorcycles engaged the Police in a gun-duel which lasted for over 30 minutes before reinforcements from the State headquarters forcing the hoodlums to escape. As a result, two Police operatives sustained gunshot injuries and rushed to the hospital for medical attention where one was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
The Commissioner of police, CP Mondag Kuryas, visited the scene for on the spot assessment. Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing and effort is being intensified in order to unravel perpetrators of the heinous act and bring them to book.
