SOUTH-EAST GAS: PRESIDENT TINUBU DELIVERS, BY FREDRICK NWABUFO

In May 2025, while on an official visit to Anambra State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a bold, trenchant declaration that reverberated across the entire South-East.

He had said: “Anambra and South-East possess huge gas reserves, yet the region has been largely bypassed by the national gas masterplan. I assure you that this will be rectified.”

In statecraft, execution is the currency of visionary leadership.

Energy remains the nucleus of industrialisation and socio-economic transformation. The 19th-century Industrial Revolution was accelerated by steam and coal — powering factories, driving urban growth, and infrastructure expansion.

President Tinubu’s declaration was never for the optics, but a deliberate policy imperative to engender balanced development.

On October 27, in Enugu, the administration’s industrial intervention in the zone reached a crescendo. The South-East Development Commission (SEDC), through its commercial arm, the South East Investment Company (SEIC), launched the South East Gas Distribution Pipeline Infrastructure Project.

When President Tinubu established the SEDC, the goal was clear: to foster sustainable economic growth and infrastructure development across the South-East.

And since its inception, the commission has not yielded itself to the maladies that plagued such commissions in the past. The commission articulated a clear roadmap and is already implementing critical programmes.

The project, backed by private capital, features a 400-kilometre pipeline network specifically designed to bridge the gas-distribution gap.

The pipeline will connect directly to ANOH Gas Processing Plant in Imo State — one of Nigeria’s largest gas infrastructures —, and OB3 (Obiafu-Obrikon to Oben) trunkline, and will be built in partnership with Gas Sync and NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NNPC NGML).

It is expected to distribute natural gas directly to major commercial and industrial hubs across all five South-East states (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo), ensuring local industries finally benefit from regional extraction.

The impact of this project will be immense for the region, considering the many industrial clusters in Nnewi, Onitsha, Aba, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi.

Already, the commission has secured $3 million in foundational capital and formally onboarded over 150 prospective corporate off-takers ready to tap into the pipeline network upon completion.

Progress of this scale demands both institutional recognition and political clarity.

As Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah aptly put it during the launch:

“We have a duty to acknowledge and support the visionary leadership of President Tinubu. He has kept faith with Ndigbo through transformative infrastructure projects springing up across the zone. We owe it to him to support the continuity of this administration. The way to reward the  President is to re-elect him in January 2027.”

Leadership is ultimately judged by legacy — by durable structures built, economic opportunities unlocked, and regional inequities corrected. Through strategic focus and ultimate delivery, President Tinubu is knitting the South-East firmly into the nation’s economic bedrock. The South-East Gas Distribution Pipeline Infrastructure Project is not just a pipeline; it is the energy conduit for a new era of regional industrial renaissance.
