United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has confirmed that the fire outbreak reported on Tuesday afternoon did not affect its head office, contrary to some media and social media reports.
In an official statement titled *“Fire Incident in Lagos Island”*, the bank’s Group Head, Media and External Relations, Mr. Ramon Nasir, clarified that the fire occurred in a building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which houses one of UBA’s branches—not its headquarters on Marina.
“We are aware of the fire incident at a building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which incidentally houses one of our many branches. Contrary to reports, the affected building is not UBA House, the bank’s head office,” the statement read. “We have ensured the safety and wellbeing of our staff and customers in the branch”, Nasir said.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fire originated in the inverter room in the basement of *Afriland Tower* before spreading to other floors, causing panic among occupants and passersby in the busy commercial area.
Deputy Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ogabi Olajide, confirmed that the fire alarm was raised at 1:38 PM. Fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Dramatic videos circulating online showed workers being evacuated through windows using fire service ladders, while others attempted to escape the smoke-filled high-rise.
As of press time, no casualties have been reported. Emergency responders remained on site to contain the fire and ensure the safety of occupants. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
