The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action as it joined the global community to commemorate the 2026 World Environment Day.

The event, themed “Global Call for Climate Action,” began with a road walk and sensitization exercise involving FAAN staff and stakeholders to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.

Representing the Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, said environmental protection remains a key priority for FAAN.

He noted that the Authority is implementing several initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact including the successful implementation of the ISO 14001:2025 Integrated Management System (IMS), for which FAAN received certification in December 2025.

Mr. Agbebire also disclosed that FAAN has made notable progress under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme, reducing carbon emissions at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while pursuing Level 3 Carbon Accreditation for Lagos Airport and Level 1 accreditation for the airports in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano. Agbebire also noted that FAAN is working closely with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to monitor carbon emissions and advance sustainable airport operations across the country.

Earlier, the Director of Airport Operations, Captain Abdullahi Mahmood, commended FAAN staff and stakeholders for their contributions to the Authority’s environmental sustainability efforts and appreciated the Managing Director’s continued support for climate-focused initiatives.

A major highlight of the event was the keynote presentation by Professor Prince Emeka Ndimele on “Inspired by Nature, For Safer Skies: Building Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Airports,” which emphasized the need for innovative and sustainable approaches to airport development in the face of climate change.

The celebration reinforced FAAN’s commitment to building greener, more sustainable airports while supporting global efforts to address climate change.
