The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says it is embarking on efforts to revive the Oguta River Port located in Imo State.
NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, stated this during a meeting with the Technical Team of the Orashi Special Energy Free Trade Zone, led by its Managing Director Dr. Chioma Nwachukwu, at the Liaison Office in Abuja.
Mr. Oyebamiji emphasized that the Oguta River Port is a vital asset for the development of Nigeria’s South East region and aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration via the Federal Ministry of Marine Economy. He further noted NIWA’s openness to partnering with private sector entities through public-private partnerships (PPP) to accelerate the port’s revitalization.
In response, Dr. Chioma Nwachukwu confirmed her company’s eagerness to collaborate with NIWA, highlighting the port’s significant potential to attract investment, foster industrial growth, and generate employment opportunities for the local community.
This update was officially communicated by Suleiman Makama, NIWA’s Assistant General Manager, Corporate Affairs.
This renewed focus on the Oguta River Port taps into its historical importance as a former colonial-era port and positions it as a promising hub for trade and industry in the South East, signaling a renewed economic vitality for the area.
