Tertiary Institution Students To Defy Continuous Closure Of Schools

The leaderships of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of University Students (NAUS) and National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), have called on the federal government to reconsider its stand against reopening tertiary institutions in the country.

In a statement, the unions expressed great displeasure and dismay, over the recent decision of government through the Minister of Education , Mallam Adamu Adamu, in respect to the fate of Nigerian students and their disrupted academics, courtesy of the Corona Virus.

In the statement signed by Activist Sunday A. Asuku National President (NAPS), Comr. Felix Simon Ijegalu National President (NAUS) and Comr. Mahmud Abubakar

National President (NANCES), they observed that it is hardly feasible that the COVID-19 may be eradicated in a fortnight and after months of observing severe security mesures, there are little or no results recorded.

They said that huge funds have been used to contain the spread of the virus but there are poorly equipped medical centres albeit as portrayed by government.

“It is unfair to keep citizens at home with nothing as a means of provision, shelter or protection.

The lockdown has shattered dreams, revenues, capitals and the source of living for many. Whereby, the poor medical facilities leaves the sick uncared for, while some who perish from hunger join the death toll of Covid-19. This makes one wonder why government workers still earn a living while private workers struggle to make it through the day.” they said.

Continuing they asked, “The government should be aware that the students and pupils they claim to protect patronise markets or worship centres. How can they be prevented from coming in contact with the virus?

In their resolution they vowed resist any further delay in reopening of schools rejecting the proposed stagnancy aimed at leaving schools under lock and key.

They said that denying students from participating in WAEC is unreasonable and unsolicited as it would be a deliberate attempt to mismanage and delay students from competing with their counterparts worldwide.

They asked government to announce a resumption date to be fixed this month or they will not hesitate to lead students both secondary schools, Polytechnics/Monotechnics, Universities and Colleges of Education nation-wide to the National Assembly in a joint protest, two weeks after the statement is issued.

    Good move indeed…
They should let us continue our studies, enough is enough.
They are saying schools are not yet safe to be re opened but election is safe to be conducted in Edo and Ondo..This is unfair..
Do not deprive us of our right to Education..
God bless the great Nigerian students.

      Good job 👍
That’s very good, I think this is the best way to express our tiredness and also our curiosity to reopen our institutions, colleges, polytechnics to lower level.
I really concurred with this idea.

Our leaders don’t see Education as a priority, if not how can a reasonable government opened churches, mosques, markets and lifted ban on inter- state movement, yet still is still close, this shows the the minister of education don’t deserve the office.

This is an awareness to everyone in Nigeria, especially the youth that education doesn’t guarantees you a better future, because in Nigeria it’s worthless. People holding power don’t have certificate, so how do you expect them to value education?

Mr. President, pls, give order for the reopening of schools, we’re tired of staying @ home doing nothing. If you were able to open markets, churches/mosques & @ same time ban lifted on inter-state, i see no reason for you not to open the schools. Moreover, lockdown is not the best solution for ur COVID-19, it’s better to think of another way out in tackling it. Thanks.

It is time to follow up your words with action. Learning must continue, with the level of corruption in this country, the only thing you can hold on to is your education, that enables you to think rationally. If you don’t act now, it may too late by the time you realize that you have been fooled by a group of people who wants you to remain in ignorance so as to enable them continue their stock in trade- the endless corruption and conspiracies that is part of what is keeping you at home today!!

How do u expect them to open the schools when its a strategy to keep looting public fund. They think we don’t know what they are doing. Ask them to account for the billions donated, billions borrowed and billions release from government purse. They have embazzled all. Student resumming school is a minus to them, they will never want that. They use the poor enquip them with Guns(soldiers) to protect themselves. I think its time we think right

The FG is very selfish. It is not safe for schools were regulations can be followed to reopen but uncotrolable Markets, Elections, transportation, are opened? Schools must reopen fast else we will surely protest. Fearful, selfish & corruption leaders!
