President Bola Tinubu has granted Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi a final six-month tenure extension through February 2027, citing the need to consolidate the National Single Window implementation and ensure orderly succession within the Nigeria Customs Service.
The decision was confirmed by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga in a statement released Friday. Adeniyi’s previous extension was set to expire August 1, 2026, but the President approved the additional six months to allow critical reforms to reach maturity.
During this transition period, Adeniyi will work alongside the Nigeria Customs Service Board to manage key administrative processes, including the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of personnel who have reached 60 years of age or completed 35 years of service.
The National Single Window, a digital trade facilitation platform, remains a cornerstone of the government’s customs modernisation agenda. Its successful consolidation is expected to enhance revenue collection, reduce transaction costs for importers and exporters, and improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in international trade.
Adeniyi’s journey with the Nigeria Customs Service began in the late 1980s after he graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University. His career progression includes appointment as Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023. President Tinubu formally appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.
The extension underscores the President’s commitment to ensuring policy continuity and institutional stability as Nigeria advances its customs reform programme.
