The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), has highlighted the Agency’s efforts in monitoring meteorological elements and ensuring timely communication of weather and climate information.
The Agency said it is providing such timely information to critical gathering of the economy such as aviation, agriculture, marine and blue economy, energy, health to achieve disaster risk reduction.
These were part of highlights at the Agency’s 2025 Stakeholders Forum in Lagos on Wednesday with the theme “Early warnings: Raising awareness on climate risks and promoting early action.”
The gathering serves as a collaborative space for diverse stakeholders to exchange insights, foster partnerships, and advance proactive strategies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s resilience against the escalating impacts of climate change.
In his opening address, the Director General of NIMET, Prof. Charles Anosike, emphasized the Agency’s critical mandate to observe, collect, and disseminate weather and climate information aimed at safeguarding lives, property, and supporting sustainable economic growth across multiple sectors nationwide.
To achieve its mandate NIMET is working closely with governmental and non-governmental partners to improve outreach and utility, including translating forecasts into local Nigerian languages to increase uptake.
The forum showcased flagship products like seasonal climate outlooks, which assist farmers in making climate-smart decisions based on rainy season patterns and dry spells.
In aviation, NIMET provides critical weather data across all flight phases, supported by digital innovations such as electronic flight folders and aerological bulletins.
Strategic collaborations with organizations including UNDP, FAO, IFAD, MTN Nigeria, and emergency Agencies specifically enables NIMET to deliver actionable weather information promptly and support disaster risk reduction.
The Aency’s public weather services also play a vital role in daily livelihoods, boosted by a modern weather studio equipped with advanced graphics for world-class weather broadcasts.
Capacity building is equally a key priority, with NIMET operating accredited training centers to develop skilled meteorological personnel.
Investments in infrastructure and digital platforms optimize data management, enhance forecast accuracy, and improve dissemination to Nigeria’s socio-economic sectors.
Despite resource constraints, Prof. Anosike affirmed NIMET’s commitment to maintaining top service quality through government support, cost recovery, and strategic partnerships across aviation and other sectors.
He stressed the urgency of effective early warning systems amid escalating climate risks, calling upon stakeholders for active participation to co-create solutions and enhance public awareness.
Anosike reaffirmed NIMET’s dedication to supporting government initiatives on climate change mitigation, food security, and disaster preparedness.
He urged stakeholders to provide feedback and collaboration to reduce climate risks, protect investments, and secure Nigeria’s future in a changing climate.
