Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed on Monday morning. The pontiff passed away peacefully at his residence in the Vatican after a period of declining health. His death marks the end of one of the most influential and reform-minded papacies in modern Catholic history.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected in March 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

During his 12-year papacy, Francis became known for his focus on humility, mercy, and social justice. He championed the poor, advocated for environmental protection through his landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, and encouraged a more open, inclusive Church — one that welcomed marginalized communities and sought dialogue with other faiths.

In recent years, Pope Francis had been battling a range of health issues, including respiratory problems and limited mobility. Despite these challenges, he continued to carry out many papal duties and appeared regularly at public events until his final weeks.

In a statement released by the Vatican, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin said, “Pope Francis was a shepherd to the world. His kindness, strength, and deep spirituality will be remembered for generations.”

World leaders, religious figures, and millions of faithful Catholics around the globe have begun mourning the loss of a man who sought to bridge divisions both inside and outside the Church. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, “Pope Francis was a moral compass in a turbulent world. His voice for peace, dignity, and justice inspired countless people of all faiths.”

Pope Francis will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica, where mourners will be able to pay their respects in the coming days. The Vatican has announced that a funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square later this week, presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals. Dignitaries from around the world are expected to attend.

With the seat of St. Peter now vacant, the College of Cardinals will convene in the coming weeks for a conclave to elect the next pope.

Pope Francis leaves behind a Church forever changed by his bold vision, pastoral heart, and tireless call to “build bridges, not walls.”
