The Director General/CEO of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has called for stronger partnership with Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), to address Climate Change related disasters
In her opening remarks, Mrs. Zubaida Umar congratulated NiMet on the early release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), the consistency of its daily weather forecasts, and the remarkable improvements recorded under the leadership of Prof. Charles Anosike. She stated that the visit, alongside key members of the NEMA management team, was aimed at strengthening the existing partnership between NiMet and NEMA.
Mrs. Umar further emphasized the importance of integrating NiMet into the NEMA Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to enhance disaster preparedness and response across the country.
Responding, the DG/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, welcomed the NEMA delegation and appreciated the recognition of NiMet’s contributions to national development. He noted that NiMet, NEMA, and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) remain strategic partners working together to provide renewed hope in addressing climate-related disasters in Nigeria.
Prof. Anosike stressed the need for the development of a Nigerian Early Warning System Roadmap, to be collaboratively designed by NiMet, NEMA, and NIHSA, as a means of strengthening inter-agency collaboration, coordination, and trust.
At the end of the meeting, both agencies agreed to immediately establish a joint committee tasked with developing and implementing an Early Warning System Roadmap for Nigeria. The initiative is expected to improve disaster preparedness and response through clear goals, collaborative action, and timely implementation.
